Game 7 vs. Baltimore

Another early departure. We might have endured, but I was concerned about Amy sitting in the cold and re-aggravating her illness. Besides, Indian food was calling us.

I don’t know if this is an unusually large number of truncated games or if it’s just bothering me more than usual because we don’t have as many tickets this season as we have in the past. Perhaps later in the summer we could pick a game or two at random and get walk-up tickets. Might be fun.

Sadly, it didn’t seem like we were missing much. Ace Pitcher Guthrie stayed home and Self-Destructing Guthrie showed up. It wasn’t the worst game we ever didn’t see, but it would have been an unpleasant experience on and off the field if we’d stayed. If nothing else, it was Dollar Dog night, and the dry cleaners in the cheap seats behind us were already well on the way to drunk and surly.

Game 6 vs. Colorado

Ugh, will winter never end? Though it wasn’t quite as icy this afternoon as it was earlier in the season, Amy missed the game thanks to a respiratory infection. At least she didn’t have to sit through School Day, which turned out to be not quite as bad as I feared.

The game itself was actually fairly good. Breaking with the current trend, they won a close, low-scoring game. Vargas did an excellent job, getting eight strikeouts against one of the best offenses in the majors. When he got tired he threw one bad pitch that sadly resulted in a two-run homer. But otherwise we kept them scoreless.

The moment of the game came early, when hot-hitting Troy Tulowitzki removed himself from the lineup with an ejection for arguing a called third strike, one of those lingering things that set the umpire off after the player returned to the dugout. In the shortstop’s defense, it did appear to be a bad call. And the home plate umpire was screwy the whole game, later calling Nori Aoki out for leaving the base line (which he didn’t) on what would have been an excellent bunt single.

The player of the game was Mike Moustakis. He’s been in a terrible slump at the plate this year, and one of the Star’s squawk boxes is agitating for his ouster to Omaha. But he hit well this afternoon, including a bases-clearing double that gave the Royals all three of their runs.

Game 5 vs. Toronto

Another chilly one, too cold to keep score or even make it past the seventh inning. Frankly, I’m surprised we lasted as long as we did. Alas, our endurance kept us at the ballpark too long to get Indian food after we left. Bratwursts and french fries for us.

The game itself wasn’t the best, though it actually got worse after we left. The highlight – for want of a better term – was when Jeremy Guthrie got aggravated with himself (he gave up a couple of home runs) and tossed a baseball all the way into the upper deck.
